OVERVIEW
Client Background:
The Boston Parks and Recreation Department is a vital municipal agency dedicated to the comprehensive management, maintenance, and programming of Boston's over 2,200 acres of parkland, encompassing historic gardens, urban wilds, playgrounds, and athletic facilities, all with the core mission of enriching the lives of residents and visitors by providing safe, clean, accessible, and vibrant green spaces and recreational opportunities that foster community well-being, promote physical activity, offer educational experiences, and preserve the city's natural beauty and historical landscapes for future generations.
Challenges:
The Boston Parks and Recreation Department aims to address the challenge of underutilization and lack of consistent engagement in the specific area of Boston Common around the Brewer Fountain and Park Street MBTA station, seeking to transform it into a vibrant public space by scheduling and managing positive, daily programming from Memorial Day weekend through early/mid-September 2025 to draw public interest, engagement, and foot traffic, ultimately providing a much-needed amenity for both Bostonians and visitors.
Approach:
Our approach for "Footprints of Boston" was rooted in creating an inviting, dynamic, and engaging atmosphere through a strategic combination of logistical preparation and curated content. We prioritized establishing a comfortable and visually appealing temporary event space by setting up essential infrastructure, including tents, tables, and a sound system for immersive audio experiences. To foster strong brand recognition and guidance, we deployed event-branded stickers and clear signage. Central to our engagement strategy were interactive elements like lawn games and dedicated tables for visitor interaction. Crucially, we cultivated a vibrant marketplace and community hub by actively acquiring 10-20 small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) exhibitors and merchants each week, providing them with free selling opportunities, which diversified offerings and supported local commerce. Furthermore, to enhance the entertainment value and draw consistent crowds, we secured 2-3 entertainers for weekend performances. The program's core was a commitment to evolving visitor engagement, achieved through a meticulously planned rotation of weekly themes, ensuring fresh experiences and encouraging repeat visits throughout the 14-week duration. This multi-faceted approach aimed to address the challenges of underutilization by directly encouraging foot traffic, dwell time, and positive public interaction within the designated area of Boston Common.
Solutions:
"Footprints of Boston" effectively solves the Boston Parks and Recreation Department's challenges by providing a structured, 14-week program of positive daily programming centered on Boston's history and culture. This thematic approach, with its promise to "walk through time and culture" and offer unique weekly "footprints" and daily activities, is designed to consistently draw public interest, engagement, and foot traffic. By turning the area around Brewer Fountain and Park Street MBTA station into an interactive and educational space that celebrates the city's diverse character, "Footprints of Boston" directly fulfills the need for a valuable and engaging amenity for both Bostonians and visitors.
Results:
"Footprints of Boston" is anticipated to yield several significant positive results for the Boston Parks and Recreation Department: a substantial increase in foot traffic and dwell time around the Brewer Fountain and Park Street MBTA station, as the daily, varied, and culturally themed activities, including around 10-20 exhibitors per week and 2-3 entertainers during weekends, will consistently draw a diverse audience and encourage extended stays; enhanced public interest and engagement as the "walk through time and culture" concept and weekly "footprints," strategically changed to create continuous visitor engagement, spark curiosity, participation, and social sharing; the transformation of the area into a vibrant and dynamic amenity providing valuable recreational and cultural experiences for both Bostonians and visitors; and ultimately, fostering a more positive public perception of Boston Common and contributing to stronger community cohesion through active engagement and the celebration of the city's rich heritage.
